Glamour, nostalgia and sophistication are some words that come to mind when describing Bungalo34. Beyond a stunning beach-side dining experience, Bungalo34 also serves as an exquisite gallery that enhances the ambience. Curated by Founder and CEO of Tashas Group, Natasha Siders, and Interior Architect Neydine Bak of Verhaal, the art in the venue showcases a selection from Natasha’s personal collection, art specifically commissioned for the space as well as a number of unique pieces from XVA Gallery. Through a careful selection process, each piece found a home on the walls as the duo decided where each artwork would be placed. Neydine, says, “The space acts as a work of art, from the décor to the paintings to the design and layout of the venue”.
The collection of artworks include captivating sculptures, mesmerizing mixed media pieces, stunning photography, and vibrant oils on canvas. One of the most remarkable artworks displayed in the venue, and dear to Natasha’s heart, are a pair of mirrored frames displaying the star signs, Pisces and Cancer. These were gifted to her parents during their wedding in the early ’70s and are a sentimental treasure bringing warmth and nostalgia to the space. Behind the placement of each piece is an intriguing story, as witnessed by the artwork’s location behind the DJ booth. In a delightful twist of fate, the pair placed the piece before they realised it was actually called “The Right Eye of DJ Cool” by Al Braithwaite. Natasha and Neydine decided to preserve its position, adding an enchanting narrative to the art display.
The mystical painting, “Halim Al Karim, Anunnaki Secrets 1, 2017,” is affectionately known as the ‘blurry guy’ painting, and is known as one of the most intriguing pieces at Bungalo34. This captivating artwork, part of a trilogy, has become a beloved character at Bungalo34, with a table featuring two whiskey glasses thoughtfully placed beneath it. Patrons often find themselves captivated by this painting, leading to lively conversations and toasts in honor of the enigmatic figure it portrays.
Considering Bungalo34’s color palette and the venue’s ambience, Natasha and Neydine have also proudly commissioned South African artists to create dedicated pieces for Bungalo34. Upon stepping into the restaurant, guests are greeted by an array of one-of-a-kind pieces that capture their attention. One notable sight is the trio of colorful ceramic pieces, exclusively crafted for the venue by the talented South African sibling duo, David and Alexandra Ross. These remarkable artworks, strategically positioned at the entrance corridor opposite the fish bar, set the stage for the artistic wonders that lie within. Adding to the visual haven, Bungalo34 features an impressive water feature on its lower deck, created by renowned artist Marina Ehlers from Mosaic Arts in Pretoria, South Africa. Reflecting the vibrant colors and spirit as well as its delectable seafood offerings, this commissioned piece captivates visitors with its harmonious blend of art and nature.
Selected artworks from the esteemed XVA Art Gallery are also on display at Bungalo34, offering guests the opportunity to acquire these masterpieces for their own collections. As pieces are sold, they will be replaced with new creations, ensuring an ever-evolving talent showcase.
